Image of Mervyn King with a pupil at Great Barr School, BirminghamAs part of a tour in the West Midlands, former Bank of England Governor Lord Mervyn King visited the Great Barr School in Birmingham.

Whilst he was at the school, students gave the Governor a presentation about a fundraising project for Sierra Leone. They explained how they were using the money to have maximum impact, before the Governor met students with a particular interest in Business, Finance, Politics and Economics. Lord Mervyn spoke to the pupils about the role of the Bank of England, followed by a question and answer session covering his position and career path.

In addition to focusing on the particularities of his sector and role, the Governor offered advice to the students more generally about getting a job and being successful. They heard about the highs and lows of having such a high profile position with enormous responsibility, and were advised to learn from their mistakes, be open to possibilities and never to underestimate the value of knowledge in any academic subject (which we’re sure the teachers at Great Barr were pleased to hear!).
