Sir Christopher Hum – Tales from his role as Ambassador to China and insights into Higher Education

14 December 2015

Sir Christopher is just one of our former diplomats who volunteer their time to share their international experience as well as help demystify the civil service’s work to broaden students’ horizons and also fielding their questions as to what happens in these influential posts.

Headteacher, Mrs Hetherton was delighted to welcome Sir Christopher Hum to Downlands as part of the Speakers for Schools initiative.  Sir Christopher Hum, former ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, spoke to students about his work as a diplomat in Hong Kong, Beijing, Brussels, Paris, Warsaw and New York as well as his love of languages and his studies at Cambridge University.  He entertained the students with tales of extraordinary events in Beijing and how the embassy supported UK nationals as well as promoting UK business interests in China. The students were able to quiz Sir Christopher about his experiences and get a true insight into his very interesting career.

Thank you to Sir Christopher and Downlands Community School for making this event possible for the students, and special thanks to Nicky Burston at Downlands for submitting this piece for us to share.
