Charlie is Chair of the London Corporate Practice of Gibson Dunn one of the leading US global law firms. Prior to that he was Senior Partner at Ashurst where he had responsibility for leading the strategic direction of the Firm and during his term the Firm doubled in size as a result of a major merger and grew profitability by some 20%. This took place against a background of increasing consolidation and globalisation in the legal services sector.
Charlie graduated from Leicester University and joined Ashurst as a trainee in 1982 becoming a partner in 1991. He led Ashurst’s market leading private equity business for a number of years, becoming a member of the Firm’s board and then Senior Partner in January 2009 just as the financial crisis was at its height.
As a practicing lawyer Charlie worked with many of the leading private equity firms as they invested in increasingly large businesses such as Gala Coral, Merlin Entertainments (the owner of Madam Tussaud and the London Eye), National Car Parks, William Hill, Santander when it bought Bradford & Bingley during the banking crisis and many others.
Charlie is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Cancer Research and of City Year and a member of the Development Committee of Impetus-PEF the private equity industry’s charity.
He is also a mentor for senior women in the FTSE 100 Cross Mentoring Scheme and an external adviser on Dept of Education panels interviewing applications for Free Schools
