Experience
Richard has extensive experience of the construction and support services sectors, both in the UK and Middle East. He started his career with Balfour Beatty as an engineer, and after graduating in 1990, he joined Bovis Construction, gaining project management experience across a wide variety of construction contracts.

In 1995, Richard joined Tarmac Construction and led the delivery of some of the UK’s first PFI projects. When Tarmac demerged in 1999 to create Carillion plc, Richard became Operations Director for Carillion Building, responsible for Carillion’s construction portfolio in London. In 2004, he became National Construction Director, responsible for winning and delivering all contracts within Carillion Building’s UK portfolio. From 2006 to 2007, Richard was Managing Director of Carillion Rail, which delivers support services and construction services to the rail industry, notably for Network Rail, for whom Carillion is a leading supplier. From 2007 to 2010, Richard was Managing Director of Carillion’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) businesses, during which time Carillion’s share of revenue from these businesses almost doubled to around £500 million.

Richard was appointed to the Board of Carillion plc in December 2009 as the Executive Director responsible for MENA, UK Building and Private Finance and was subsequently appointed Chief Operating Officer, responsible for all of the Group’s businesses and for the Group’s Health and Safety and Sustainability programmes. Richard succeeded John McDonough as Carillion Group Chief Executive in January 2012.

Richard is married to Geri and has two young sons Thomas and Joseph. Richard’s extramural interests include skiing, cycling, motorcycle trials and rugby.
