30:30:30 Campaign and Executive Job Shadowing Launched at Silverstone CDX17

23 March 2017

The UK Automotive 30% Club has launched a major new initiative at Silverstone during annual automotive industry fair, CDX17. Organised in collaboration with Speakers for Schools, the 30:30:30 campaign will see 30 industry leaders give speeches to 30 secondary schools across the country, followed by 30 executive job shadowing placements for selected students. The campaign’s aim is to stimulate social mobility and gender balance in the automotive workforce.

The launch event – sponsored by Jardine Motor Group – was opened with a speech by Founder of the UK Automotive 30% Club Julia Muir, and included talks by CEO of Jardine Motor Group Neil Williamson, UK MD of Ducati Tim Maccabee and the HR Director of Toyota GB Robin Giles. The audience were also delighted to hear from two 6th form students Sabrina Moore and Gurpreet Kaur about how a visit from an Automotive 30% Club member to give a speech in their school had inspired them to seek a career in the automotive industry.

Over the next six months, 30 speakers will deliver inspirational speeches to mixed or female only audiences in state secondary schools across the country, further supported by 30 executive job shadowing placements. Each speaker, or another senior professional from their organisation, will host a female student for a one week placement. The campaign will close in October 2017 so that the results and findings can be shared at the Annual UK Automotive 30% Club Conference on November 2nd 2017.

Julia Muir, CEO of non-profit social enterprise Gaia Innovation, has been instrumental in bringing all parties involved together and conceiving and designing the campaign. A leading spokesperson for equality and diversity within the automotive sector, Muir chaired three events during CDX17 and will lead the 30:30:30 campaign to its completion.
