“A Diverse Board Is A Better Board” – Sir Michael Rake discusses apprenticeships, gender diversity and re-establishing faith in business
15 April 2015
Mount Carmel Catholic College for Girls welcomed Sir Michael Rake, Chairman of BT Group PLC and President of the Confederation of British Industry, to speak to 90 year 10 students earlier today.
Sir Mike gave the students a brief overview of his life story, from school to training as a chartered accountant and how this led him all around the world, up to the roles he currently holds.
Taking questions from the students Sir Mike discussed the value of a university education but was keen to let students know that it isn’t the only option – that apprenticeships are a better option for some students, and can be a more suitable route to some future roles.
He told the cohort, “Business doesn’t care about which school you went to, which university you went to, what your background is. Business is interested in your attitude and your approach.”
Speaking candidly in answer to a question about work life balance he talked about the importance of doing something you love in life.
Sir Mike also stuck around after the main talk to discuss more specific questions about paths to the world of business, and accountancy in particular, with a small group of students and assisted them with some focused advice and various options.
Thank you to Sir Mike and to Mount Carmel for a fantastic event!
