Aspiring journalist flourishes on work experience week at WikiTribune
10 November 2017
Nashada has always been interested in journalism but wasn’t sure if it was the career path for her until her recent work experience week at exciting new media outlet – WikiTribune based in the Shard in Central London
She was taking part in an Autumn half-term opportunity made possible by a new Speakers for Schools programme, S4SNextGen.org, which matches state school teenagers with leading organisations for work placements.
Nashada is a student at Christ The King Sixth Form in Lewisham, South East London where her teacher described her as an outstanding student that didn’t have any contacts to get a placement.
“I come from a state school, and therefore opportunities like these would not usually reach me… It has helped me make the concrete decision of becoming a journalist,” said Nashada.
Neither of her parents went to university so she wants to be the first generation in her family to do so. She aspires to go to Harvard and launch her career in journalism from there.
WikiTribune is a new media outlet founded by Wikipedia creator and S4S speaker Jimmy Wales and edited by another S4S speaker, Peter Bale. Staff at the organisation said they loved having her around.
“16-year-old Nashada has not only been invaluable in helping us in the office: she’s also been a fountain of useful information about the way her generation consumes and evaluates news,” they said.
This was one of our October half-term opportunities which took us to over 100 S4SNextGen work experience placements since launch!
These included placements at:
- Reed Smith
- Bank of England
- Tulchan Communications
- BSI Group
- Virgin Money
- M&C Saatchi
- And lots more is planned for 2018!!
