Former Head of the IoD gives students advice as they prep for college applications
20 June 2014
This week Miles Templeman, former Director General of the Institute of Directors, visited St Mark’s Church of England Academy in Surrey to give students a glimpse into some of the choices he made as he has gone through his career.
Over 150 students heard about Miles’ personal journey as well as his varied experience in major retail and consumer brands — emphasising to students that experience itself is the best way to figure out what you want to do in life, and that ‘business’ isn’t just sitting behind a desk but a chance to get out and see the world.
He included university in these experiences, telling students “You shouldn’t think of university just as another big school, but a life experience.”
In turn Miles had the opportunity to answer a range of questions from the crowd including “Who was your biggest inspiration?” (“My wife!”) and “Is work experience worthwhile?” (“Most definitely helpful to learn about careers and good for your CV.”).
Students finished the session by chatting with Miles about their own aspirations and letting him know they were now interested in learning how they could work in business like Miles.
A big thank you to Miles Templeman and the school for a fantastic talk!
