Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Ross McEwan visits South Leeds with S4S and MoneySense
7 July 2014
Last week at the South Leeds Academy, CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland – Ross McEwan gave an insight into his personal journey that led him into a career in banking and finance as part of his first Speakers for Schools talk.
Speakers for Schools is an independent charity that provides young people in state schools across the UK with access to inspirational speakers – free of charge. It was established with the ambition of organising free talks in state schools with distinguished and eminent figures from all walks of life, including leaders in business, the arts, sciences, sport, politics and the media.
Students from each of the five School Partnership Trust Academies were a part of the audience and had the opportunity to ask questions from Ross’ personal view on characteristics to be successful, to practical tips on doing well in a job interview. This talk marked second event this year for RBS senior executive supporting the programme, with Sir Philip Hampton – RBS Chairman, giving his Speakers for Schools talk to students in Tower Hamlets, London earlier this year.
Robert Peston, Founder of Speakers for Schools said: “Given the widespread public anger against bankers, it is great that Ross McEwan has made himself accountable, via his Speakers for School talk, to young people – who must do a better job, than my generation, in preventing banks mucking things up”.
Ross McEwan, CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “It has been a great opportunity to share my experience with the pupils of The South Leeds Academy. I know the importance of strong business links into our communities and I really appreciate the invitation to speak. At RBS we want to support young people which is why it is important we contribute to local communities and continue to run a number of programmes covering financial education, careers and enterprise.”
Grant Saker , Guidance Professional – School Partnership Trust Academies commented: “We at the School Partnership Trust are very grateful to Ross McEwan for giving up his time to speak with our students. Students from all five academies have been inspired by what Ross has had to say and his words of advice and encouragement will certainly help them in their career planning. Ross has complimented the excellent guidance that our students receive; receiving a consistent message from someone as successful as Ross has been excellent. We should also thank Speakers for Schools for offering us this wonderful opportunity and hope to strengthen our relationship with further talks across our academies in the future.”
Following the event, Speakers for Schools will see other eminent figures from the banking world inspiring future generation of your bankers and financiers.
A huge thanks to Ross McEwan, the RBS team and the School Partnership Trust Academies for an excellent event!
