Say ‘Yes’ to Opportunities
16 November 2016
The Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls in Romford, Essex was delighted to host a visit from Baroness Sally Morgan during their weekly enrichment lesson for Year 13 students.
Baroness Sally Morgan’s message to young women of today was don’t turn any opportunities down, always be early for interviews and meetings and smile!
Baroness Morgan has had a diverse career, from working as a geography teacher whilst being involved with the British Youth Council to joining the Labour Party as their head of political campaigns. Currently Baroness Morgan sits on a number of board committees for both businesses and charities and is still involved in education through the Ark Academy group.
Baroness Sally Morgan spoke about her career path and how she has often said “Yes” to opportunities that have presented themselves, even when she thought they were going to be difficult to fit into her already very busy life. In order to manage this, she stressed the importance of building a strong team around you that you can trust and work well with.
The girls were encouraged to think about the extra things they could do to make them stand out from the crowd – a part-time job, volunteering, clubs, societies – all these contribute to making you the kind of employee that companies (and universities) are looking for. She spoke about her family and how she has ensured she has had important quality time with them throughout her career by insisting on a work-life balance, not always easy when you are the only woman in a male-dominated 10 Downing Street!
The girls were fascinated by Baroness Morgan’s talk describing her as ‘inspiring, especially as there are not many women involved in politics’ and ‘an amazing lady who has had such a variety of jobs and been so successful in all of them’.
Our thanks to Baroness Morgan for giving up her time to visit Frances Bardsley Academy and to the school for being a great host.
