Former Head of UK Investment Banking and Broking, Citi Group
I currently lead the UK investment banking business at Citi. Citi is one of the world’s largest banks and the most global, with operations in over 160 countries. London is Citi’s headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The UK is Citi’s second largest market after the US. The role of investment banking is to advice companies on the big strategic decisions that they make, such as buying another company or raising funds to build a new factory. Every year, we work on deals worth many tens of billions of pounds.
I joined the industry in the late 1980s. I had had a very troubled upbringing, including a spell as a teenager living on my own in a bed & breakfast. I saw university, then a career in the City as a way of escaping my past. When I was hired I was the first state school educated boy to take on my role at one of the elite UK merchant banks of the era.
