Journalist & Former Editor
I have been a journalist for more than 40 years. The majority of my career has been as a reporter and executive on a variety of national newspapers. I also spent two years as special to the Secretary of State for Education. I have been news editor of both the Daily and Sunday Mirror, The Sunday Telegraph and The Observer and executive news editor of The Guardian. I am treasurer and a trustee of the Journalists’ Charity and a member of the Society of Editors. I am a judge for the British Press Awards and The Royal Television Society. I write on media ethics and the media and politics for the online magazine The Drum.
I have lectured to numerous groups of young journalists about being a reporter and through anecdotes highlighted the highs and lows of the profession. I have covered wars, politics, murder cases and the occasional talking pet.
