Dame Veronica Sutherland

Former Senior Diplomat

Biography

I was a member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1965-1999. I have served overseas in Copenhagen, New Delhi and Paris, in addition to being appointed Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Niger in the late 1980s. From 1990-5 I worked in London as Director of Personnel in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and my retirement post was as Ambassador in Dublin from 1995-9.
After retirement I was appointed Deputy Secretary General (Economic and Social) in the Commonwealth Secretariat (1999-2001), and then for seven years I was President of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. This is a college for mature women students and is part of Cambridge University.
