David Picton

Chief Sustainability Officer, Carillion PLC

David Picton is Carillion’s Chief Sustainability Officer, leading the development and delivery of its 2020 sustainability strategy. He’s had a varied career, including Royal Air Force military operations, Motorola and Sky before Carillion, and his educational background includes 3 degrees.

When he speaks at schools, he can cover a range of topics – either focusing on specific areas of the organisations he’s worked at, on the work he currently leads in corporate social and environmental responsibility, on going to war with the RAF or simply on how he’s used the things he learned at school and what he wished he’d known then. As a father of two girls – Years 8 and 10 – he’s also got some firsthand experience of the challenges of ‘growing up’ in today’s society.

Carillion’s sustainability programme features six positive outcomes – for communities, for the environment and for successful, sustainable business across the UK and in its overseas markets. David has been with the company since the end of 2011, initially leading its supply chain development programme before taking on the sustainability lead. He joined them from Sky, where he was the Customer Operations Director responsible for its supply chain and Amstrad’s manufacturing production in China and Romania. As a Director with Motorola for four years before Sky, he worked with EMEA logistics companies and postal organisations to integrate mobile data technology solutions. In 20 years with the Royal Air Force, he led teams as a wing commander in a range of operational, strategic and programme management roles across the UK, Europe, USA, Turkey, Pakistan and the Middle East – seeing foreign policy from the Cold War, through peacekeeping and on to a post-9/11 world.

He has a BSc (Hons) in Earth Sciences, a King’s College (London) MA in International Strategy and an MBA from the Open Business School. David lives in Hampshire with his family, enjoys writing, ski-ing, golf and ran the London Marathon 2014 to raise funds and awareness for Kidscape – helping to prevent bullying and protect children.
