Former Chief Executive, Benfield Motor Group
Mark is the former Chief Executive of Benfield Motor Group. Founded almost 60 years ago by his grandfather in Newcastle upon Tyne, Benfield Motor Group was one of the largest and most well recognised privately-owned companies in the UK motor trade until its recent acquisition by Lookers Plc.
Following a career in advertising and an MBA at top-ranked Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in Chicago, Mark returned to the family business in 1992, serving over 15 years as its Chief Executive.
Benfield grew to 38 dealerships across the North of England and South West Scotland, employing over 1,600 people and priding itself on outstanding customer service and a highly engaging employee culture. With sales reaching nearly £750m in 2015, the company broke into the Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 100 as the North East’s largest private company and was recognised as the Motor Trader’s 2015 Dealer Group of the Year. Mark was recently recognised for his contribution to his industry as the Automotive Management Award’s Hall of Fame 2016 inductee. He retains an interest in the industry continuing with various roles for the industry’s trade association, NFDA.
Outside of his industry, Mark has been involved in the development of young people, most recently with the Prince’s Trust as a member of its North East development committee. He was previously a governor of Newcastle College Group and North East Chair of the Institute of Family Business.
He is married with two children and lives in Northumberland, England where he counts real tennis, choral singing and jazz piano amongst his interests.
