Mervyn began life in the business of music as a DJ in 1978 soon after he was recruited by Blues & Soul magazine, to fill the chair Pete Tong had vacated. B&S had been the nurturing ground for many a record executive and true to form he was snapped up by Virgin Records in 1986 and hasn’t looked back.
He left Virgin in 1989 to run Sleeping Bag Records in Europe prior to two stints at BMG. Sandwiched in between was a GM role at Motown International looking after the label in all markets outside US for Polygram.
Five years ago he left Sony Music, which was born out of the merger with BMG, after an 18 year tenure having served in a number of senior roles including VP Global Marketing (Europe), VP Marketing and VP Strategic Partnerships. His list of artists he has worked with is as diverse as his music collection and includes the likes of: Soul II Soul, Todd Terry, Mantronix, TLC, Stevie Wonder, Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, Lionel Richie, The Notorious BIG, Whitney, Kings Of Leon, Maroon 5, Britney, EPMD, Beyonce, John Legend, Usher, Alicia Keys, OutKast, Justin Timberlake and so on.
Mervyn in now MD of a successful strategic partnership agency working with an impressive network of clients and agencies eager to work with music and sport to enhance their brands and connect with consumers in a less direct manner.
With a music business career that spans the best part of 32 years, Mervyn is a passionate music man who believes very much in fair play and equal opportunities. During this time, and even still today, he has been a stark campaigner for recognition of these causes inside and outside the industry. He is a Music Ambassador for The Midi Music Company, Trustee of Arms Around The Child, Non-Exec Director of the Weller Media Agency and serves on The BPI’s Diversity Council.
