Robin Buchanan

Former Chairman, Michael Page International plc


Robin Buchanan is a Senior Adviser in Bain & Company’s London office. During his nearly forty years of business experience he has worked extensively in North America, Continental Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as in the UK.

His particular focus has been on transformation strategy and leadership. He is a recognised expert on board effectiveness.

Robin has over twenty years deep experience in financial and business services. In addition, he has advised Bain mineral and mining clients for over ten years and petro-chemical companies for over five years. He has helped Bain’s quoted and private equity clients achieve measurable increases in value of billions of dollars.

Robin has held several senior leadership roles at Bain. He was elected by his colleagues to be the Managing Partner of Bain in the UK in 1990 and then became the Senior Partner in 1996. Robin initiated the firm’s Private Equity consulting practice and headed up the firm’s worldwide Mergers & Acquisitions Practice. He was a main board director of Bain & Company, Inc for nine years.

Robin left full-time employment with Bain after twenty-five years to become the Dean and then President of London Business School. During and immediately after his tenure the School’s MBA programme was three times ranked the best in the world.

He has been a non-executive director of two other FTSE 100 companies – Liberty International plc and Shire plc. As well as his Bain responsibilities Robin is a Non-Executive Director on the boards of LyondellBasell NV, the $20 billion plus NYSE quoted petro-chemicals company, Michael Page International plc, the FTSE global recruitment company and Schroders plc, the FTSE global asset manager. He is also an Adviser to private equity firms, family offices and voluntary organisations. He is a member of the Trilateral Commission.

He is a Chartered Accountant (FCA) and Financial Services Authority “Approved Person”. He earned an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar)
