Rt Hon David Lammy

MP for Tottenham

Biography

David Lammy is Labour MP for Tottenham, a seat he won in a by-election in 2000, becoming the then youngest MP in the Commons. Until the 2010 election he had been a Minister of State at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills for two years. In this role, he was responsible for adult learning and offender learning and skills. He has also held posts in Health, Constitutional Affairs and Culture.

Before entering politics, David worked as a lawyer in London and practised for a year in Los Angeles, after studying at Harvard.

David is a firm believer in the ability of education to change lives, and takes every possible opportunity to encourage young people, especially those under-represented at many top universities, to achieve their academic potential. He recently made an investigation, via Freedom of Information Requests, to Oxbridge universities concerning the social and racial background of those who gain places.
