I spent 34 years as a career diplomat. I was specialised in the Middle East. I was an ambassador four times; I ended up in Baghdad. I did most kinds of Diplomatic Service work except serving in a multilateral mission like the UN. Since retiring I have operated entirely in the voluntary sector. Among other things I have been a member of the governing board of a Sixth Form College, a Commissioner of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, President of the charity CARE International, Chairman of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs and President of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies.
