After leaving Oxford, where he studied classics and philosophy, Nick Montagu started his working life as an academic, teaching philosophy at Reading University, before joining the Civil Service. His jobs there covered a number of areas, including health, welfare and transport, and he finished his career as head of the Inland Revenue: he was also the diversity champion for the whole Civil Service and chaired the civil service benevolent fund.
Since retiring, he has worked on pensions, insurance and seminars for overseas governments. He currently chairs the governing body at Queen Mary University of London and is Chairman of the Financial Ombudsman Service.
