Chairman, National Grid PLC & Chairman, Tate & Lyle
I left state grammar school in 1966 with 3 A levels. Graduated in 1969 at Cambridge in mathematics and joined the UK computer industry. Worked my way up through a series of increasingly senior technical and then general management positions to reach management board level in 1983.
Moved to the telecomms industry in 1987 and held 2 Managing Director positions in different UK companies before moving to the Defence industry at MD and Main Board level in 1994.
In 2000 I moved to the UK public sector as a senior civil servant to lead a programme to reform public procurement (following a review I did for the Government in 1999) and in 2003/4 I led a major review of UK public sector efficiency reporting direct to the PM and Chancellor.
Since 2004 I have undertaken non-executive chairman roles in various sectors including mobile phone software, healthcare, outsourcing and distribution of electronic components. I have also led 2 further independent reviews – one for the UK Government in 2006 on Ministerial & Royal Air Travel, and the other for the Australian Government in 2008 on its use of ICT.
I am currently the chairman of Tate & Lyle plc, chairman of National Grid and chairman of the Aircarft Carrier Alliance. Also a member of the Government’s Efficiency & Reform Board and the Advisory Board of The Sutton Trust.
I am a fellow of a number of bodies including the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the British Computer Society.
