Sir Philip Hampton

Biography

Sir Philip Hampton is Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline, a post which he has held since January 2015. Previously, he was Chairman for Royal Bank of Scotland, J Sainsbury, Group Finance Director for Lloyds TSB Group, BT Group, BG Group, British Gas and British Steel.

He gained an MA in English from Oxford University, and then started his working career as a chartered accountant working in London and West Africa. He took an MBA from INSEAD from 1980 to 1981, and returned to join Lazards investment bank for nine years. Working on mergers, acquisitions, business restructurings and capital markets; in 1986 he was seconded to Lazard Freres, New York, and also worked extensively with Lazard Freres in Paris.

Away from work, Philip is a keen sailor and has taken part in the ARC transatlantic yacht race.
