Sir Stephen Wall

Former Ambassador, Political Expert & Historian

Biography

I was for 35 years a British Diplomat. I was Private Secretary to five British Foreign Secretaries and worked in No 10 Downing Street for three Prime Ministers (Callaghan, Major and Blair). I was for five years Britain’s Ambassador to the European Union and, for four years, Tony Blair’s senior adviser on Europe. My book on Europe (A Stranger in Europe), published in 2008, is the story of British EU policy under Thatcher, Major and Blair. I am also the author of the Official History of Britain and the European Community (published in 2012) and am presently writing the next and final volume.
