Managing Director, NHS Leadership Academy


Stephen is the Managing Director of the NHS Leadership Academy in the NHS People Directorate.
Stephen has been engaged in leadership and leadership development throughout his career. First in the military where he led small and large teams on operational service around the world. During his military service he was also was Chief of Staff for all Royal Marine leadership training, and then the Head of Command Leadership and Management training for the Army Division at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. Stephen’s master’s thesis, and his subsequent research, was on the importance of leadership in creating and sustaining ethical cultures.
Stephen joined the NHS in 2016 as the Managing Director of the NHS Leadership Academy. Since joining the Academy Stephen has worked to continue the Academy purpose of supporting and enabling outstanding leadership at every level of the NHS. Stephen was at the heart of the team who wrote Developing People: Improving Care and is a passionate advocate for developing compassionate and inclusive leaders who work in collaboration across traditional boundaries. He has overseen the transformation of the NHS Leadership Academy into a lifelong learning resource for leaders at every level of the NHS; an NHS Leadership Academy that serves the leaders of the NHS and provides the support they need across the arc of their working lives.
